Interpreter Information

Court Interpreters

Court interpreters are experts in language interpretation and are assigned only to provide linguistically equivalent interpretation from one language into another.

All official court business in California is conducted in English. When a party or witness in a case has limited English proficiency, that person may need a court interpreter to communicate in court proceedings and understand what is happening.

Upon request, qualified interpreters are provided in the courtroom at no cost for parties and witnesses in Criminal, Traffic, Juvenile, Unlawful Detainer, Guardianship, Conservatorship, Domestic Violence Restraining Orders, Small Claims, Family Law matters, and other Civil matters.

Interpreter Request Form

The Court will try to provide an interpreter in every language and in every civil case. There may be times when the Court cannot provide an interpreter. If an interpreter is not available, you will be notified through the email provided at the time of the request.

Request an Interpreter

  • Interpreter requests for Spanish must be submitted at least three (3) court days before the hearing, Interpreter requests for languages other than Spanish must be submitted in writing five (5) court days before the hearing.
  • To ensure that an interpreter can be secured, all interpreter requests must be submitted in advance of the hearing on an Interpreter Request form is available in courtrooms at customer service windows, or online at INTERPRETER REQUEST FORM.
  • If a request is not submitted in a timely manner, the Court may not be able to provide an interpreter.
  • If an interpreter has been requested and is no longer needed please notify interpreter services by phone or fill out the contact form.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

The court also provides American Sign Language interpreters, real-time captioning, and other accommodations for parties, witnesses, and jurors that are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or that have another disability.
