If you live in Yolo County, you can ask the court here to change your legal name. The process involves submitting forms to the court, publishing in a newspaper (unless your change is confidential), and getting a decision, called a decree, from the court. It usually takes about 2 months and the court fee is $435. You can apply for a fee waiver if you can't afford the fee.

Please note name change petitions must be filed in person at the courthouse. The hours are 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
